Psychotherapy begins with initial consultations (usually three meetings). These allow discussing reasons for seeking therapy and articulate concerns. For couples, both partners attend together.
Consultations provide an opportunity for mutual decission if working together is suitable. It’s a time to understand the difficulties and assess the fit of the approach. Options (short-term, long-term, couples, referral) are considered.
While consultations can offer initial perspective, their main purpose is to clarify the focus and establish a basis for potential ongoing work. The decision to proceed is made thoughtfully afterward. Consultations are 50 minutes (individuals) or 60 minutes (couples).
